Walking in the Spirit
If we live our lives in obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit we won't make mistakes, because He's perfect, not us. That we make mistakes is a prove that we have not "totally" learn to follow His Leading.
Yielding to the Leading of the Holy Spirit is not done by magic but process of time and determination. Our flesh is configured in disobedient to God, so those years we were sinners, our soul has adapt to sinful flesh. Now that we are saved. A new operating system has been installed, it takes time to fully adapt, with determination and readiness to follow the Lord..
So therefore, we need to train our spirit, our soul, and our body to follow the Lord. Our spirit man which saved (as believers) needs to learn to pick the Voice of God and His Leading. Our soul must be train to agree to the instructions of God through our spirit man. Our body which is very fleshy must be brought under "forceful" discipline to always obey the leading of God.
Our spirit man which is saved, wants to obey God because Jesus is now the Lord. But our soul which has been exposed to philosophy and carnality over time, needs to be tutored by the Word of God over time (hearing and hearing). And our body that had gain PhD in flesh, needs to be panel beat with Spiritual activities like fasting, prayer, discipline. Our spirit wants to obey God, our body doesn't want to. That's why the bible says, the spirit and the flesh fights over a man, leaving the man with choice of who to obey.

So, if you are not born again your life is not under God's government and neither can you be led by His Spirit. You're at risk and at wrath. The eligible people that can be led by God's Spirit are Sons (who have been redeemed by the Blood of Jesus..)
